Some Weeds are Friendly – Getting to Know and Use the Good Ones

Some plants volunteer to grow in our gardens, and while we call them 'weeds,' they're just plants we didn't plant. Many are nutritious and delicious, yet we often overlook them. Before we dismiss them, let’s open our minds and see what they have to offer.

Time & Location

Jun 10, 2025, 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Sakaw Gardens Hall, 5820 11a Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6L 3A9, Canada

About the event

About the Workshop:

  • There are some plants that simply WANT to grow in our gardens, - so much so, that they volunteer their services, and don’t ask for any special treatment. They’re used to being treated rudely (and truth be told, some are jerks), but many of them deserve more respect.

They’re called ‘weeds’, and while we don’t like that word, a weed is only a plant we didn’t plant - deliberately. We’d be making a mistake to think that just because its called a weed, it should be destroyed. Many weeds are not only GOOD to eat, but nutritious and delicious. However, if we don’t USE them – just let them grow and go to seed, then they really are ‘weeds’.

  • Open your mind and determine to make friends with some plants you never thought of that way before.
