MILLHURST COMMUNITY GARDEN WORKSHOPS 2024
In 2024 our garden workshops will continue to focus on self reliance in garden & home. We will start off with members of our community sharing some of their cultural food followed by a series of workshops designed to teach skills to support a balance home and garden life..

FOOD STORAGE

When it comes to Food Storage there is plenty of opportunity for flexibility, but there are two strong rules – without which in the long run, you will FAIL, and you will waste a lotta money in doing so. I call these “non negotiables” and for me, they are NON Negotiable! After these, the way is wide.

72 HOUR KITS

Natural disasters are rarely ‘convenient’. In the event of an emergency, you and your household must be prepared to be self-sufficient for a minimum of 72 hours without power, running water, or the ability to purchase anything. You cannot expect anyone to be responsible for your safety and comfort if you have ignored your own obligation for those very important things. Every government website: federal, provincial and local, stresses the importance of citizens being self sufficient for at LEAST 72 hours without power or running water. Whether you shelter in place or have to evacuate, you will need basic supplies for every member of your household in an emergency.Essential items like food, water and medication in one kit, easy to locate when the power is out and easy to grab and go in case you have to leave your home quickly. The unprecedented evacuations of 2023 should be enough to wake us up to this important area of emergency preparedness. Learn what to pack, how best to pack, best containers to use, how often to update them, and why you should . . .

AMENDING YOUR SOIL FOR BEST RESULTS

Few gardens are naturally blessed with the ideal conditions for plant growth, and no garden stays that way year after year. Taking proper steps to amend your soil before you plant will greatly improve your garden’s performance.

COMPANION PLANTING & AMARANTH 101

Make the best of a limited amount of space, by planting vegetables that ‘like’ each other in close proximity. Also, some vegetables can be planted later in the season when other’s are finished.
An introductory mini series on growing a GREEN most of us don’t know much about in our area. If you’ve been around the garden for the last few years, you have probably noticed a whole lotta AMARANTH growing in Fidelis’ plot. The leafy greens of Amaranth are a highly nutritious vegetable similar to spinach in taste, and used the same way as many other leafy vegetables, including in mixed-green salads. This hardy vegetable, well suited to our climate, is one we all should know more about.
For 15 minutes at the beginning of every workshop, Fidelis will walk us through an entire growing season from early spring planting to final harvest and everything in between.
