Alberta Native Bees: Why We Need Bees & How You Can Help!

Join us for an engaging introduction to the wonderful world of native bees! This presentation will explore the status of bees in Alberta, highlight the differences between native and managed bees, and celebrate the incredible diversity of native bee species. Learn about their habitat and feeding preferences, discover practical ways to support native pollinators in your community, and get inspired by the Alberta Native Bee Council's (ANBC) current programs and initiatives.

Native Bees 101 is an introductory overview of the native bees in Alberta. Join us to learn about their amazing diversity, how to tell them apart from other insects, where they live and what they eat, and what YOU can do to help them! You will see how to identify the bumble bees of Southern Alberta, a collection of specimens that showcase Alberta Bee diversity, examples of houses you can provide for them, and we will play some games! About The Instructor:

• Ilan Domnich is an entomologist who completed his MSc at the University of Alberta examining entomology extension in agriculture in AB. Along with a BSc in animal biology, as well as a BCom in finance, Ilan also works as an artist, including scientific illustrations. His passion for science communication is evident with his work on the Bugs 101 MOOC, volunteering at the Royal Alberta Museum Bug Room, and in his role as the Outreach Director for the Entomological Society of Alberta since 2020. Ilan hopes that his passion for insects will get more people to care about native bees.
